Happy to meet you, I'm Dominique

Everyday I think to myself, How Lucky Are We?

How I Stayed Healthy on a 3-Week Trip Without Stress

For the last three weeks, I’ve been away from home—one week for a work training in Dallas and two weeks of vacation with my family. Being out of routine used to really stress me out. I work hard to stay on track with my fitness and wellness goals, and in the past, a “bad” day felt like I was undoing weeks of progress.

But with time and growth—both mentally and physically—I’ve learned that honoring your body means giving it grace. You can prioritize health while enjoying life. You can stay grounded even when your surroundings change. And most importantly, you don’t have to sacrifice happiness or connection just to hit a goal.

Here’s how I managed to stay consistent with my health values, without being overly rigid or losing joy during this trip.

Let’s Talk About Fiber – My Personal Super-Nutrient

At home, I don’t count calories. I eat intuitively but stay mindful of my protein and fiber intake—especially fiber, because it plays such a powerful role in how our bodies function. Here’s why fiber matters so much:

  • Supports digestion and promotes regular bowel movements
  • Keeps you full longer, which helps with appetite control
  • Feeds good gut bacteria, improving your microbiome
  • Lowers cholesterol levels and supports heart health
  • Helps regulate blood sugar, especially important for sustained energy
  • Reduces inflammation and improves overall gut health

My personal fiber goal is 30g a day. While that’s relatively easy to hit at home, I wasn’t sure how I’d manage that while traveling—especially without access to my usual meals and snacks.

💊 Don’t Forget the Vitamins

Another small—but important—part of my routine I stayed consistent with was taking my vitamins and supplements. It’s something that’s easy to let slide when you’re traveling, but for me, staying on top of this was a simple way to still show up for my body each day.

I didn’t use a fancy pill organizer—I just packed the full bottles and brought them along. It might have taken up a little extra space, but it was 100% worth it for the way it helped me feel grounded and cared for.

Here’s what I took daily:

  • Magnesium – Supports my sleep and muscle recovery
  • Probiotic – Keeps my gut happy, especially while eating out more
  • NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) – Great for immune support and overall detox
  • Turmeric Curcumin – My go-to for inflammation and joint support

Taking these consistently made a huge difference. It reminded me that health isn’t about being perfect—it’s about doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

🥯 Travel Hack: ROYO Bagels to the Rescue

Before the trip, I discovered ROYO bagels, a high-fiber bagel brand that completely changed how I approached breakfast on the road. Each bagel contains 31–32g of fiber—enough to meet my entire daily fiber goal in one meal.

I ordered a variety pack with:

  • Cinnamon Raisin
  • Everything
  • Plain

They’re made with clean ingredients and designed to support gut health without compromising on flavor or satisfaction. ROYO was created to help people feel fuller, more energized, and more balanced—especially important when routines get disrupted.

I’m not gluten-free, but I usually avoid gluten because it helps me feel less bloated and more energized. These bagels do contain gluten, but I felt great eating them—satisfied without the usual crash.

My go-to plan was to enjoy a ROYO bagel for breakfast, helping me stay on track with my fiber goal right from the start of the day. But of course, some mornings we ate out—and that’s part of the joy of travel too.

Our bodies also deserve a delicious yogurt bowl at an adorable restaurant with people we enjoy being with.

Travel is about experiences, and honoring your body also means letting yourself enjoy moments like that without guilt.

🧠 Mindful Eating on Vacation – Grace Over Guilt

It wasn’t just breakfast where I stayed mindful—every day, I practiced intentional, balanced eating. I wasn’t tracking every bite or stressing about protein macros. I simply listened to my body and made choices that felt right for me in the moment.

Some examples of how I stayed mindful at lunch and dinner:

  • Choosing a salad instead of fries, not out of restriction, but because I know my body appreciates lighter, nutrient-dense meals
  • Opting for water over soda—especially important when you’re naturally less hydrated while traveling
  • Continuing to avoid most gluten, except for the ROYO bagels, because I know how much better I feel without it

It all comes down to knowing your body—what fuels it, what makes it feel good, and what allows it to keep showing up for you.

There’s no one-size-fits-all. What matters is how you feel and how you respond to your body’s needs.

The Mind-Body Connection: Progress Isn’t All or Nothing

I used to beat myself up over every deviation from my plan. But I’ve learned that progress isn’t linear. You don’t “undo” all your hard work with a few days off. In fact, giving your body rest, enjoyment, and new experiences is part of the journey.

The real transformation is mental.

You start to understand that:

  • You can pause and still progress.
  • You can nourish your body and your soul.
  • You can take breaks and come back stronger.

This shift in mindset has been one of the most powerful parts of my fitness journey.

Movement on the Go – How I Kept Moving Without the Gym

Staying active on vacation doesn’t have to mean sticking to your exact workout routine. It means moving your body in ways that feel good and realistic.

Here’s what my three weeks of movement looked like:

Week 1 – Dallas, TX (Work Training)

  • Used the hotel gym several times
  • Walked to hit my 10,000 steps a day
  • Visited a HOTWORX studio nearby for a great sweat session

Week 2 – Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN

We drove from Ohio and stayed overnight on the way. We arrived late—around 10:30pm—but my brother and I still squeezed in a short gym session at the hotel. Not because I felt obligated, but because I knew it would feel good and help me settle into the trip.

That ended up being the only gym workout I did for the next two weeks, and that’s okay. While in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, I stayed active by hiking and walking a lot—exploring nature, popping into shops, and wandering through tourist attractions.

Back at the cabin, I stayed moving with short YouTube workouts:

It was just the right amount of movement. No pressure, just showing up in ways that felt right for the space I was in—mentally, physically, and literally.

Week 3 – Anna Maria Island, FL

  • We walked whenever we had some extra time—my boyfriend loves moving just like me!
  • Did bodyweight YouTube workouts together (shoutout to Rowan Row and MadFit again)

Having a partner who shares your health goals makes a huge difference. It’s not about perfection—it’s about finding what works in each moment.

A Final Thought: Your Body is Strong, and So Are You

If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s this:

We are lucky. Lucky to be able to travel. Lucky to try new foods. Lucky to move our bodies. Lucky to give ourselves grace.

Don’t let fear of falling “off track” stop you from living your life. The gym will be there when you get back. Your goals can be paused or adapted. Your body will not crumble without routine—it’s more resilient than you think.

The progress you’ve made is still there. Your strength is still there. And best of all? You’ll come home refreshed, re-inspired, and ready to keep going.

You Deserve Joy and Health

Whether you’re planning a work trip, a family vacation, or a spontaneous getaway—know that you don’t have to choose between wellness and fun.

Take care of your body, listen to it, move it with love, and feed it with kindness.

And when in doubt? Eat the bagel. Go on the walk. Drink the water. And remember how lucky you are to be doing any of it.
